A lifetime of hard work, determination, and pure grit have paid off. It took six starts from the big right-handed hurler, and with help from his veteran third baseman, a dream is realized. McCutchen is now a MLB winning pitcher.
A cool clear day, 63 degrees at first pitch, the wind was briskly blowing out at 17mph. Pirates at Cincinnati, McCutchen v. Lehr. It would be McCutchen's last chance at a victory for the 2009 season.
McCutchen pitched into the seventh inning, giving up only four hits, one earned run, while walking two and striking out five. It was McCutchen's fifth quality start in six tries. McCutchen pitched a shutout through the first six innings, but after giving up a lead off home run in the bottom of the seventh to LF Wladimir Balentien, he was pulled after 93 pitches. The offense wasn't too shabby either. McCutchen drew a walk to lead off the top of the third inning, CF Andrew McCutchen (no relation) doubled to deep center, moving Dan up to third base. Next up to bat was the hero of the day, 3B Andy LaRoche. He drove a single to left field, driving in both McCutchen's, giving the Pirates a 2-0 lead that they would never relinquish. After a fourth inning home run by LF Lastings Milledge, a victory for Dan McCutchen was secure. Dreams do come true....
